Tuvalu Convention Centre

Status: Complete

A Model of Precision and International Collaboration

The Tuvalu Convention Centre, a noteworthy finalist in the 2020 Excellence in Steel Awards, represents a landmark project for George Grant Engineering (GGE). Tasked with constructing a convention centre in Tuvalu—one of the least-visited nations globally—this $1.5m - $3m project highlighted GGE’s capabilities on an international stage.

Project Overview:

Designed to be completed in time for the prestigious Pacific Island Forum, the Tuvalu Convention Centre is a testament to GGE’s commitment to excellence and precision in structural steel fabrication. The entire steel structure was manufactured in New Zealand and shipped to Tuvalu, where a team of Kiwi riggers, alongside local workers, successfully erected the building within a stringent timeframe.

Innovative Solutions and Techniques

This project utilised advanced 3D modelling to ensure that all steelwork components fitted perfectly, showcasing the practical benefits of bolted truss design. Given the limited access equipment available on Tuvalu—only two forklifts—GGE innovated by supplying specially manufactured man cages that could be used on the forklifts and suspended from cranes. This approach not only facilitated safe and efficient work but also adapted to the unique challenges of the location.

Local Collaboration and Training

The GGE team worked closely with the local workforce, which lacked prior training in steel erection techniques. By collaborating with the local supervisor, the team ensured that all construction met high standards of quality and adhered to strict health and safety protocols.

Project Significance

The Tuvalu Convention Centre stands as a symbol of GGE’s ability to deliver complex projects under challenging conditions and in remote locations. It underscores our expertise in handling international projects where precision, safety, and collaboration are paramount.
